Kangra Airport taxi

Gaggal is one short runway on a valley floor, and the flights do not always come. We meet the ones that land, and we have a plan for the ones that do not — which is the part nobody books in advance and everybody needs.

Kangra Airport

In short

Yes — we meet every arrival at Gaggal, and we would rather have your flight number than your scheduled time, because we track what the aircraft is actually doing rather than what the timetable said. The terminal is about twenty minutes from Kangra town, where our cars are kept, and twenty-five to thirty-five from Dharamshala, so a pickup here is a short run. There is no waiting charge for a late landing, and if your flight is cancelled outright we will talk you through the road options instead of leaving you at the gate.

  • The terminal is twenty to twenty-five minutes from Kangra town and twenty-five to thirty-five from Dharamshala.
  • McLeod Ganj is forty to fifty-five minutes up the hairpins from the airport.
  • Baglamukhi temple is under an hour and a quarter, the closest airport to the Kangra shrines.
  • There is no waiting charge for a late landing, because we track the flight rather than the timetable.
  • When a flight is cancelled the usual fallbacks are Pathankot by rail or Amritsar by road.

Where we meet you

The spots a car can actually wait

  1. Point 120–25 min from Kangra
    The terminal forecourt

Gaggal is a small terminal and the forecourt is directly outside the arrivals door, which makes this the simplest pickup we run anywhere. The driver will be holding a name board. There is no multi-storey to navigate and no shuttle — you walk out and the car is a few paces away, which is the one genuine advantage of flying into a small airport.

  2. Point 220–25 min from Kangra
The highway turning below the airport

Where the airport road meets the main valley highway, used mostly for departures when the forecourt is congested around a departure wave. It is two minutes from the terminal and it is also the sensible handover for a larger vehicle. Worth knowing about only because on the three or four busiest days of the year the forecourt genuinely fills.

  3. Point 310–20 min from Kangra
Kangra town, for a rerouted arrival

Not at the airport at all, and the reason it is on this list is that it is where a good share of Gaggal passengers actually end up. When a flight diverts or cancels, people come in by road or rail instead, and the regroup usually happens in Kangra, twenty minutes away. Having it named here saves a conversation at a bad moment.

What people ask us to drive

Fares are for a Maruti Ertiga (6 passengers); ask for the price in any other car. One way, for the whole car and its driver — not per person. It is the fare we quote before the car leaves and the fare you pay; nothing is added afterwards. A return the same day, a night on the road or a detour is priced when you ask. A fare marked “for the day” is the car and driver for the whole day, there and back.

Local detail

What it is like driving here

Getting a car in and out

Gaggal is a single short runway on the Kangra valley floor with hills on both sides and no instrument approach worth the name, which is the fact that governs everything about planning around it. Flights go when the visibility allows and do not when it does not, and that is a normal part of using this airport rather than an occasional disaster — winter fog on the valley floor and monsoon cloud on the Dhauladhar both close it, sometimes for a morning and sometimes for longer. The driving side is the easy half. The airport road is short and flat, it meets the highway within a couple of minutes, and from there everything is straightforward: Kangra one way, the climb to Dharamshala the other. Any of our vehicles comes here, including the larger Travellers, which is not true of the destinations most of these passengers are heading for. The climb is the thing people underestimate — the terminal is on the valley floor and McLeod Ganj is a long way above it, forty-five minutes later and a jumper colder.

Who rings us from Kangra Airport

Overwhelmingly people who are about to have a good day or a bad one, decided by the weather. Inbound, it is visitors on a short trip who flew precisely to avoid the ten-hour drive from Delhi, and the booking is simple: a name board, a short run up the hill, done. Outbound is where the real work is. A cancelled departure at Gaggal turns into a road problem within about twenty minutes — somebody with a connecting international flight out of Delhi the next morning suddenly needs either the train from Pathankot or a car to Amritsar, and they need it decided quickly. We get those calls several times a season and the useful thing we offer is not the car, it is knowing which of the two options still works given the hour. The third group is small and steady: residents of Kangra and Dharamshala flying out early, booking the night before, who use the same driver every time and never look at a website at all.

Gaggal is the reason a trip to Dharamshala can be a long weekend rather than a week. It is also a small airport on a valley floor between two ranges, and the second fact undoes the first often enough that it belongs at the top of the page rather than in the small print.

The pickup is the easy part

The terminal has one door. The car is a few paces outside it. We track the flight number rather than the schedule, there is no charge for waiting on a late landing, and the run up to Dharamshala is half an hour.

The cancellation is the part worth planning

Flights here go when the weather allows. When one does not, the useful question is not “when is the next flight” but “what still gets me to Delhi by morning”, and the answers are the Pathankot train or a car to Amritsar. Both take real hours and both have a cut-off after which they stop working.

Ring us before you join the queue at the desk. We will tell you honestly which option is still live, including the times when the honest answer is that neither is and tomorrow morning is better.

Questions

What people ask before they book here

How much is a taxi from Kangra Airport?

In a Maruti Ertiga (6 passengers). One way: Dharamshala, ₹1,500; McLeod Ganj, ₹2,200; Naddi, ₹2,000; Bir, for Billing, ₹4,500; Pathankot, for the train, ₹5,000; Amritsar, ₹9,000. For the whole day, there and back: Baglamukhi temple, ₹4,500; Dharamshala sightseeing, a full day, ₹4,500. Every fare is for the whole car with its driver, not per person, and nothing is added afterwards. Anywhere else is quoted when you ask.

What happens if my flight into Gaggal is delayed?

Nothing, from your side. We track the flight rather than the timetable and there is no waiting charge for a late arrival. Give us the flight number when you book, not the scheduled time — it is the only thing that tells us what is actually happening.

What if the flight is cancelled altogether?

Ring us. Cancellations at Gaggal are a normal feature of the airport rather than a rare event, and the two realistic fallbacks are the train from Pathankot or a car to Amritsar. Which one works depends on the hour, and that is a conversation rather than a booking form.

How long from the airport to McLeod Ganj?

Forty to fifty-five minutes, and the reason it takes that long is the climb on hairpins rather than the distance. Dharamshala town is twenty-five to thirty-five. Neither is a long drive; both take longer than they look on a map.

Is this the nearest airport for the Devi temples?

Yes, for Baglamukhi, Brajeshwari and Chamunda — Gaggal is around an hour from Baglamukhi and closer still to the Kangra shrines. For Chintpurni and Naina Devi you are better off arriving by train at Amb Andaura, which is much closer to that end of the circuit.
