Taxi in McLeod Ganj

Cars that actually fit. McLeod Ganj is a one-way loop with a parking problem, so what matters here is not whether we can come but where we can stop — and which vehicle we send up the hill.

In short

Yes, we run cars in and out of McLeod Ganj all day, and the useful part of the answer is about size and stopping rather than availability. The town is a tight one-way loop with almost no parking, so we meet you at a named point rather than at a door, and we send a Dzire or an Ertiga unless there is a reason not to. The car comes up from our base in Kangra and is with you in fifty-five minutes to an hour and ten. Ring with where you are staying and where you are going and you get a fixed price before it leaves.

  • A car reaches McLeod Ganj in fifty-five minutes to an hour and ten, coming up from our base in Kangra.
  • Bhagsu is ten to fifteen minutes from the main square and Dharamkot twelve to twenty.
  • Naddi viewpoint and Dal Lake are both twenty to thirty minutes, which makes one short loop.
  • Gaggal airport is forty to fifty-five minutes below the town down the hairpins.
  • Gallu Devi, where the Triund path starts, is fifteen to twenty-five minutes up.

Where we meet you

The spots a car can actually wait

  1. Point 155–70 min from Kangra
The main square and bus stand

The default, and the only place in McLeod Ganj where a car waiting for two minutes is not blocking the town. Even here it is two minutes rather than twenty — the square is the turning point for the buses and there is a constant argument for the space. We will be there at the time agreed rather than early, which is deliberate.

  2. Point 255–70 min from Kangra
    Below the Tsuglagkhang complex

The temple road is a dead end with a barrier and no turning circle worth the name, so the pickup is on the approach below it rather than at the gate. It is a three-minute walk downhill with luggage and an unpleasant one uphill, which is worth knowing when you are deciding whether to be collected from your hotel instead.

  3. Point 355–70 min from Kangra
    Jogiwara Road

Where a lot of the guesthouses actually are, and a road that becomes one-way and single-file in the middle of the day. A car can get down it early or late without much trouble and cannot get down it at two in the afternoon in season. If your booking is for the middle of the day we will suggest the square instead and say why.

  4. Point 41–1.25 hrs from Kangra
    Bhagsu road

The stretch between McLeod and Bhagsu village, which has more room than anywhere in the town itself and is the sensible pickup for anyone staying that side. It is also where we meet larger groups, because there is somewhere for a bigger vehicle to sit while people and bags come out of four different guesthouses.

What people ask us to drive

Fares are for a Maruti Ertiga (6 passengers); ask for the price in any other car. One way, for the whole car and its driver — not per person. It is the fare we quote before the car leaves and the fare you pay; nothing is added afterwards. A return the same day, a night on the road or a detour is priced when you ask.

What it is like driving here

Getting a car in and out

Everything difficult about driving here comes from the same fact: the town was a small hill station and is now a busy one, on the same roads. The centre works as a one-way loop, the through road is barely wide enough for two cars where it is widest, and the parking is genuinely inadequate rather than merely tight — in season the police move cars on from the square constantly and they are right to. What this means for a booking is that we deal in meeting points and timings, not doorsteps. A Dzire or an Ertiga is what we send. An Innova will come up if you need the space, but it is a slower trip and a harder park. A seventeen-seat Traveller can do the road with the right driver and we will say so honestly if we think your group would be better in two cars. The twenty-six-seater does not come up here at all. The road itself is well surfaced and constantly hairpinned; in a heavy monsoon the cut sections above Dharamshala shed material and can run one-way for a day.

Who rings us from McLeod Ganj

Almost all of it is visitors, and the shape of the booking depends entirely on how long they have been here. Somebody two days into a first trip books the loop — Naddi, Dal Lake, Bhagsu, the temple — as a half day with a car waiting, and wants a driver who will point things out. Somebody at the end of a week books the leg out, which is Gaggal, Pathankot, Amritsar or the long haul to Manali, and wants an honest departure time more than anything else. Then there is a third group that barely exists anywhere else in this district: long-stay travellers, often here for months on a course or a retreat, who need a car three or four times across a season and always at awkward hours — a visa run, an airport drop at four in the morning, a friend arriving off the night bus. They ring the same number every time and they are the reason we keep the smaller cars parked where they can get out of the town quickly.

What we would send

Read more about this placeClose

McLeod Ganj is the busiest three hundred metres of road in this district, and nearly everything people find frustrating about getting a car here is a consequence of that rather than of the cars.

The town is a loop. It has one square, which is also the bus terminus, and a handful of lanes running off it that were laid out for people on foot and mules. Add ten thousand visitors in October and the question stops being “is a taxi available” and becomes “where can it legally stop, and for how long”.

What we do about it

We book meeting points rather than addresses, we keep the small cars for up here, and we turn up at the agreed minute rather than waiting at the kerb. None of that is a limitation we are apologising for — it is how anybody who drives this town every day actually works, and the alternative is a car idling in the square while somebody finishes packing.

Going down the hill

Every long journey from McLeod starts with the same twenty minutes of hairpins down to Dharamshala, and it is worth building that into your plan. A four o’clock start for a Gaggal flight means leaving McLeod at four, not leaving Dharamshala at four.

Questions

What people ask before they book here

How much is a taxi from McLeod Ganj?

In a Maruti Ertiga (6 passengers). One way: Gaggal (Kangra) airport, ₹2,200. Every fare is for the whole car with its driver, not per person, and nothing is added afterwards. Anywhere else is quoted when you ask.

Can a taxi reach my guesthouse in McLeod Ganj?

Sometimes, and it depends on which lane and what time. Plenty of guesthouses are on roads a car cannot enter at all, and plenty more are on roads that are fine at seven in the morning and impossible at two in the afternoon. Send us the name when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it is a door pickup or a five-minute walk to a meeting point.

How long does the Naddi and Dal Lake loop take?

Half a day is comfortable. Each leg is twenty to thirty minutes of driving — what takes the time is standing at Naddi waiting for the Dhauladhar to clear, which is the point of going. Sunset is the good slot and it is also the busy one.

Will you drive us to Triund?

As far as Gallu Devi, fifteen to twenty-five minutes up, which is where the road ends and the path starts. Everything above that is on foot. We drop walkers there early and collect them at an agreed time, and the driver will wait rather than leave if you are slower coming down than you planned.

Is it cheaper to take a taxi from Dharamshala instead?

Not meaningfully, for anything going down the valley — it is the same car doing twenty minutes more. For a short hop inside McLeod Ganj it obviously is, but those are the trips where walking is usually faster than waiting for a car to get through the square.
