This page is the drive itself — one day, Chandigarh to Dharamshala. If you would rather stop along the way, we run it as McLeod Ganj and Bhagsu.

The default way in. Chandigarh has the flights and the trains, Dharamshala has almost none of either, and the 245 km between them is what closes the gap.
It is a long drive but not a hard one. Two lanes, reasonable surface, one town worth stopping in, and the only real climb in the last hour. Most people sleep through the middle of it and wake up somewhere around Kangra with the Dhauladhar filling the windscreen, which is the correct way to arrive.
On the way
Where we stop, and why
- Stop 185 km inAnandpur Sahib
About ninety minutes out, and the one stop worth planning rather than taking when someone needs it. The Virasat-e-Khalsa museum sits above the town and is free; the gurudwara below it serves langar all day. Twenty minutes gets you a cup of tea, an hour gets you the museum.
- Stop 2145 km inUna
The last flat town before the road starts climbing, and where we usually stop for lunch on a morning departure. Nothing to see. Everything to eat, and the dhabas on the bypass are used by drivers rather than tourists, which is the recommendation.
- Stop 3225 km inKangra
Twenty minutes short of Dharamshala. If you are arriving in daylight and are not exhausted, the Brajeshwari temple and the fort above the confluence are both ten minutes off the road, and doing them now saves a separate half-day later in the week.

What the drive is actually like
Surface and traffic
Two-lane the whole way, single carriageway from Ropar onwards, and in decent repair — this is the route the buses take, so it gets fixed. The first eighty kilometres out of Chandigarh are flat and fast. From Anandpur Sahib the road starts to roll, and from Nadaun it climbs properly, though never steeply enough to bother anyone. The one genuinely slow stretch is Una town itself, which has no bypass worth the name and can cost twenty minutes at the wrong hour. Traffic is heaviest on Friday evenings and Sunday mornings, when Chandigarh empties into the hills and back. Nothing on this road requires a high-clearance vehicle.
Through the year
Open year round, and one of the few Himachal approaches that is. Snow does not reach it — Dharamshala sits at 1,450m and the road tops out lower than that, so even in January the surface is wet rather than white. Monsoon is the season to respect: the Nadaun to Kangra stretch runs along cut hillside and small landslides do close a lane in July and August, usually for an hour rather than a day. We watch the forecast and leave earlier when it is heavy. Summer afternoons in Una regularly hit 40°C, which is worth knowing if the car is not air conditioned — ours are.

Questions
What people ask about this run
How much is a taxi from Chandigarh to Dharamshala?
₹9,000 in a Maruti Ertiga, one way, for the whole car with its driver — not per person. It is the fare we quote before the car leaves, and nothing is added afterwards. The drive itself takes 6–7 hrs.
Can you pick up from Chandigarh airport?
Yes, and it is most of what we do on this route. The driver waits inside with a board, parking is paid by us, and there is no charge for a delayed flight — we track the arrival, not the booking time.
Is it better to fly to Gaggal instead?
If the fare is close, yes — Gaggal is forty-five minutes from Dharamshala instead of seven hours. But it is a small airport with few flights and a genuine tendency to divert in bad weather, and the diversion is usually to Amritsar or Chandigarh, at which point you are doing this drive anyway with less of the day left. Many people fly into Chandigarh deliberately for that reason.
Can we break the journey overnight?
You can, though almost nobody needs to — seven hours on this road is an ordinary day. If you would rather, Anandpur Sahib and Una both have reasonable hotels, and it costs you nothing extra with us beyond the driver's night halt.
