How to reach Dharamshala
There is an airport 12 km away that most people never find, a railhead 90 km away, a narrow-gauge line that stops 29 km short, and a road from Delhi that takes twelve hours. Which one is right depends almost entirely on how much the last leg matters to you.

The short answer
The nearest airport is Kangra at Gaggal, 12 km from Dharamshala, but it has few flights and they cancel in poor weather. Amritsar at 198 km and Chandigarh at 241 km are the reliable air options. The nearest broad-gauge railway station is Pathankot, 90 km away. From Delhi it is 497 km by road, ten to twelve hours. Every one of these ends in a car.
The facts, in one place
- Kangra airport at Gaggal is 12 km from Dharamshala and sits at about 770 m.
- Pathankot is the nearest broad-gauge railhead, 90 km short of Dharamshala.
- The narrow-gauge line reaches Kangra Mandir, still 29 km from Dharamshala by road.
- Amritsar is 198 km away and Chandigarh 241 km, both with far more flights than Gaggal.
- Delhi to Dharamshala is 497 km of road and runs to ten or twelve hours.

Most pages that answer this question list four transport modes and leave you to work out which one is actually sensible. The useful thing to say first is the thing they all have in common: none of them finishes the journey. There is no railway station in Dharamshala, the airport is down in the valley, and the buses stop below the town. Whatever you arrive on, something drives you the last bit.
So the real question is not how to reach Dharamshala. It is how far short you are willing to be dropped, and what that costs you in time.
The four ways in
| Arriving at | Distance to Dharamshala | Last leg |
|---|---|---|
| Kangra airport, Gaggal | 12 km | 45 minutes |
| Pathankot station | 90 km | 3 hours |
| Kangra Mandir, narrow gauge | 29 km | 1 hour |
| Amritsar airport | 198 km | 4–5 hours |
| Chandigarh airport | 241 km | 6–7 hours |
| Delhi, by road | 497 km | 10–12 hours |
Every distance there is a measured road distance rather than a remembered one. The times follow the same arithmetic as how long Himachal drives take.
Gaggal, the airport people do not know is there
Kangra airport sits at Gaggal, 12 km from Dharamshala and about 770 m above sea level, which is a thousand feet below the town it serves. It is close enough that arriving there feels like cheating.
Two things stop it being the obvious answer. The schedule is thin — a small number of flights on small aircraft — and the approach needs visibility the Kangra valley does not reliably supply. Cloud sits on this valley for weeks in the monsoon and mornings are frequently thick in winter. Cancellations are not rare and they are not always announced early.
The 45 minutes we allow for 12 km surprises people. It is real. The road gains about 550 m in that distance and runs through Gaggal and the Kangra approach roads, which are busy from mid-morning onwards.

If you fly here, keep the day after loose. A cancelled Gaggal flight usually means rerouting through Amritsar, and that turns a 45-minute transfer into a five-hour one at no notice.
The two airports that actually run
Amritsar is 198 km out and four to five hours of driving. It is the one we recommend most often: more flights, more airlines, a far better cancellation story, and the Golden Temple sitting on the route if you want to break the journey rather than endure it. The Amritsar transfer is a comfortable half-day.
Chandigarh is 241 km and six to seven hours. It wins when the flight timings work better, and it is the natural choice if Himachal is a loop rather than a destination. The Chandigarh run is the busiest road we drive.
The train, and what it can and cannot do
Pathankot is the practical railhead — 90 km away, on the broad gauge, well connected overnight from Delhi. Come off a night train at Pathankot and you are three hours from a late breakfast in McLeod Ganj.
The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line is the romantic option and it gets closer: the train runs up the valley and Kangra Mandir station is 29 km from Dharamshala. It is a beautiful piece of railway. It is also very slow, the timetable is sparse, and it will not save you the road leg — it shortens it.
Take the narrow gauge because you want to have taken it. Do not take it to save time, because it does not.
What we would actually tell you
For a first trip from Delhi, fly to Amritsar and drive. Four hours on a decent road beats twelve on a mixed one, and you arrive able to do something with the evening.
For a second trip, or if you are already in Punjab, take the night train to Pathankot. It is the least tiring way to cover the distance and you lose no daylight to it.
Fly to Gaggal if the timing is genuinely convenient and you have a spare day in hand. It is wonderful when it works and it does not always work.
And if you are looking at the Delhi road run because it seems simplest — it is twelve hours, most of it flat and dull, and the interesting part starts when you are already too tired to look at it.

Questions that come up
What is the nearest airport to Dharamshala?
Kangra airport at Gaggal, 12 km from Dharamshala town and about 17 km from McLeod Ganj. It is genuinely close. The catch is the schedule — a handful of flights, small aircraft, and a runway that does not operate in low cloud, which the Kangra valley produces a lot of.
What is the nearest railway station to Dharamshala?
Pathankot, 90 km away, for anything on the broad gauge. The narrow-gauge Kangra Valley line runs closer and will put you off at Kangra Mandir, which is still 29 km from Dharamshala. There is no station in Dharamshala itself and there never has been.
How do I get to Dharamshala without a car?
Fly to Gaggal if the weather is behaving, or take an overnight bus from Delhi or Chandigarh, both of which run to Dharamshala directly. The train cannot finish the job — every rail option leaves you between 29 and 90 km short and you will be in a taxi or a bus for the remainder.
Should I fly to Amritsar or Chandigarh for Dharamshala?
Amritsar if you want the shorter drive, at 198 km and four to five hours. Chandigarh if the flight times suit you better, at 241 km and six to seven. Amritsar also lets you see the Golden Temple on the way, which Chandigarh does not compete with.
How far is Kangra airport from Dharamshala, and how long does it take?
12 km, and we allow 45 minutes for it. That sounds absurd for the distance and it is not — the road climbs about 550 m in those 12 km and passes through Gaggal and the Kangra approaches, which are busy at most hours of the day.
How long does it take to drive from Delhi to Dharamshala?
497 km, and ten to twelve hours realistically. Leaving Delhi before dawn is the difference between arriving for dinner and arriving at midnight. We would usually rather fly you to Amritsar and drive the last four hours than do the whole thing on the road.
Is there a direct bus to Dharamshala?
Yes, from Delhi and from Chandigarh, mostly overnight, and they run to the Dharamshala bus stand rather than McLeod Ganj. They are cheap and they work. What they are not is comfortable on a road that spends its last three hours climbing.
